My focus in health coaching is not just on getting you past hurts and problems and ‘back to normal’, but on creating a more empowered ‘you’ so that you deal with future upsets in a way that they don’t become a problem at all! As an experienced health coach and doctor of clinical hypnosis, I can help you speedily resolve issues so you can get on with a more passionate and productive lifestyle.

Ordinary "therapy" just focusses on getting the client to feel "okay" again. Health Coaching aims to bring the clients health back to a state that is more than just okay and that supports your ongoing growth towards self-actualisation. I have a client-centred and outcome-focused approach to health coaching. There are countless health applications for Hypnosis, NLP & NS. Below are listed just a few that I commonly come across. Stop Smoking

The use of hypnosis in stop smoking therapy is acknowledged by the British Medical Association as the most effective help available to those who are addicted to smoking. Many can achieve freedom from smoking in just a single session however statistics indicate that only 15% of single session clients remain smoke free in the long run whilst those who have multiple sessions are 66% more likely to remain free.

I recommend a minimum of two sessions (even if you have stopped after the first session). Weight Management

Effective weight involves more than just dieting. In fact, I don’t recommend 'diets' as part of a healthy weight loss programme as their focus is on ‘scarcity, abstinence and going without’.

The focus of weight management sessions with Optimum Mind is to tackle any underlying causes for bad eating habits such as; social pressure, emotional eating, eating for company, to relieve boredom or stress, self punishment, etc. Making changes in this way not only naturally and permanently changes negative eating habits but gives you a greater sense of control and happiness in the world. Weight problems can also be due poor metabolic function. Using hypnosis we can ecologically reprogramme the unconscious mind and make more efficient a person’s digestive and metabolic function, thus resulting in a naturally healthier and fitter you.

 

  • In a 9-week study of two weight management groups (one using hypnosis and one not using hypnosis), the hypnosis group continued to get results in the two-year follow-up, while the non-hypnosis group showed no further results (Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985).
  •  In a study of 60 women separated into hypnosis versus non-hypnosis groups, the groups using hypnosis lost an average of 17 pounds, while the non-hypnosis group lost an average of only .5 pounds (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1986).

 

  • In a meta-analysis, comparing the results of adding hypnosis to weight loss treatment across multiple studies showed that adding hypnosis increased weight loss by an average of 97% during treatment, and even more importantly increased the effectiveness POST TREATMENT by over 146%. This shows that hypnosis works even better over time (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1996).
  • The bottom line here is that when hypnosis sessions are added to various weight loss programs, the results are always better — more than 146% better over the long term!

 

Phobias

NLP is rather well know for the “10 minute phobia process” that has proven highly effective in removing fears. But this is far from the only approach. I employ this and many other techniques for eliminating phobias – and none of them involve so called “exposure therapy” that forces client’s to confront the object of their fear. Rather, everything is done in a safe and supportive environment that allows fear to disappear easily and comfortably.

 

Traumas (past or present)

Traumas come in many forms, and whether a current situation or a past event, you deserve to live a full and happy life and certainly don’t deserve to have negative events or people haunting your life.

I employ many techniques in order to eliminate the negative psychological effects from your mind, including the well known NLP “trauma process” that has proven highly effective with survivors of major traumatic events such as wars, the Lockerbie bombing and the September 11th attacks on the US. I have helped people make full recoveries from rape, lifelong physical abuse, natural disasters such as earthquakes and many other physical and psychological traumas.

 

Low Self Confidence

Low self confidence is not having the belief that we can achieve or attain certain goals even though we may have the prerequisite training, knowledge and capabilities. We can have good self esteem or self value, yet still hold ourselves back from achieving what we really want. I consider low self confidence as a Coaching rather than therapy issue, though if self esteem issues are involved as well, the approach may be different.

Hypnotic coaching, NLP and for this issue in particular NS, can be immensely powerful. Limiting beliefs about our confidence and capabilities can be rectified and we can then move forward with a greater appreciation of our abilities and talents.

 

"Low" Self Esteem

Feeling that you are not good enough or have no value as a person defines what most people term low self esteem. In truth, self esteem is a process you either do or don't do. To define it as "high or low" means it is conditional on external constraints; trying to try to 'raise' self esteem is chasing the wrong answer. 

'Low' self esteem can be very debilitating and can cause a person to retreat into themselves and become shy or socially phobic. There can be many causes and NS, NLP and Hypnosis have proven track records for removing such issues and creating a robust sense of self esteem. As with every issue, the cause will be unique to the person and Alan’s client-centred approach will be tailored to the individual. Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of fear or dread that something bad is going to happen. The cause may be known consciously or not. In extreme cases it can lead to retreat from the world and can cause conditions such as agoraphobia (fear of going outside). Anxiety causes stress and can also lead to stress related illnesses such as gall stones, back and neck pain, lowered immune functioning and more.

I use a client-centred approach to remove the underlying causes of any conscious and unconscious fears and to increse self efficacy, value and to promote future confidence and courage. Depression

Depression is characterised by a feeling of sadness, despair and despondency. The World Health Organisation predicts that by 2020 depression will be the second highest cause of death and disability in the world. Depression is commonly treated with drugs but these can have very debilitating side effects and can in some cases worsen the condition.

While antidepressants may improve mood by boosting the “feel-good” chemicals in your brain, they don't treat the actual cause of the depression. Because of this, relapse rates are high once drug treatment is stopped. In contrast, the emotional insights and coping skills acquired during coaching can have a more lasting effect. A University of Pennsylvania study backs up this claim. It found that cognitive therapy works just as well as antidepressants and is more effective than medication in preventing relapse once treatment ends. Allergies

Allergies affect many people in varying degrees of severity from mild discomfort to anaphylactic shock. Allergies are not ‘fixed’ and can often come and go. Allergies are basically overreactions of the immune system and as such are controlled by unconscious functioning. NLP is renowned for the “Allergy Process” wherein in less than half an hour the unconscious mind and immune system is ‘re-educated’ to respond appropriately.
